The South Fraser Community Rail Society has been working non-stop for many years securing government’s support to reactivate the 99 km publicly owned (with passenger rights) public transit rail corridor South of Fraser – Pattullo Bridge to Chilliwack and have garnered unparallelled and unprecedented support – public, business and regional municipal political support.
Experience in Ottawa is needed – I am not going to mention the names of the other candidates running for this nomination as it is not my intention to openly criticize their backgrounds or intent, but it is my intent to highlight our reasons for supporting Mike de Jong KC. Mike is a lawyer and has been elected for 30 years as a provincial MLA, representing Matsqui, Abbotsford Mount-Lehman and Abbotsford West over those years despite constituency redistribution! Being elected for 30 years speaks volumes for his reputation for hard work and accomplishment on behalf of is community and the province.
He has served for a number of years in cabinet – as Minister of Labor and Citizens Services, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Reconciliation, Attorney General, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Minister of Health, and Minister of Finance.
Senior Provincial Minister Experience – As a former B.C. Minister (covering a number of ministries) Mike de Jong has significant experience on a number of fronts, not the least of which is Finance and Forests, the latter involved in our softwood lumber negotiations. Mike’s senior provincial political experience will be invaluable in representing our region, our province and our country!
Prime Ministers can only select Cabinet Ministers from the MPs elected? In my better than 45-years of experience in politics, at all levels, I haven’t seen anyone in a better position or with more experience to take on a major cabinet portfolio in Ottawa than Mike de Jong. That opportunity, should it occur, puts British Columbia and the South of Fraser Region in a prime position to be listened to at the Federal Cabinet table in a very serious way, something that has been absent for decades!
